Les adverbes (adverbs)

Les adverbes (adverbs) are words that modify or clarify the meaning of a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.

Examples:

vite, très, souvent.

In French grammar, an adverb is an invariable category that provides circumstantial information (time, place, manner, quantity, affirmation, negation, doubt, etc.) or modifies the intensity of an adjective, a verb, or another adverb.

Adverbs may be simple (bien, tard), derived (rapidement), or compound (tout à coup).

Their position in the sentence varies depending on their type and syntactic function.

1. les adverbes de manière

They indicate how the action happens.

Example: Il parle doucement.

2. les adverbes de temps

They indicate when the action happens.

Example: Nous partirons demain.

3. les adverbes de lieu

They indicate where the action happens.

Example: Ils vivent ici.

4. les adverbes de quantité

They indicate intensity or degree.

Example: Elle travaille beaucoup.

5. les adverbes d’affirmation, de négation et de doute

They express the speaker’s attitude.

Examples: oui, non, peut‑être.

Il marche lentement

Nous venons souvent ici.

Elle comprend parfaitement

Ils arriveront bientôt

Je suis presque prêt.

Tu parles trop vite.

Le train part déjà

Il reviendra probablement.
